Welshwoman Lauren Price successfully defended her WBA world welterweight title when she stopped Bexcy Mateus in devastating fashion in Liverpool on Saturday.
The 30-year-old dropped her Colombian opponent three times, all with left hands, before the referee stopped the bout in the third round.
The bout was a huge mismatch as Price outclassed her opponent and extended her unbeaten streak to eight matches in her first world title defence.
“With speed comes power, I enjoyed it out there tonight,” Price told Sky Sports.
“I wanted to express myself a little, I want big fights next year.
“Thanks to my opponent, I didn’t know much about her but I knew she had good balance. I had a great camp and I’m over the moon.”
Price also holds the Ring Magazine title and will look to unify the division if her rival Natasha Jonas passes her test with Croatia’s Ivana Habazinova.
The Welsh boxer featured on the undercard of IBF welterweight champion and rival Jonas in Liverpool and called out her domestic rival after the win.
“It’s going to be a big British fight, being an Olympic champion I wanted to be involved in some massive fights,” she said.
“It’s a hell of a fight for British fans and boxing in general.”
In just her seventh professional bout, Price won a world title and became the first ever Welsh women’s world champion in boxing.
The win continues Price’s remarkable sporting career which includes four senior world kickboxing titles as well as numerous European gold medals and representing Wales in football at international level.
Price shows her knockout ability
The Liverpool showground was nicely packed with a large hall with flat seating so the audience was all on the same level.
Price’s name was met with cheers in the arena as she made her way to the ring, dressed in a shiny red fight suit with gold trim.
Moments before the game, she remained cool and locked in the shadow box as she waited for the first bell.
The contest began with Mateus on the front foot, the Colombian, 29, looking to set the tone and forcing Price to box off the back foot.
Mateus’ corner encouraged their fighter as he pressed, but Price started to land some decent punches and then, in the first round, scored a knockdown when she landed a powerful left hook from a straight right hand.
Mateus beat the count and was stunned back into his corner for the end of the round.
Price’s confidence grew as they entered the second, finding success again as she stepped in and dropped Mateus again.
She landed a devastating straight left hand to the head of the Colombian, who hit the canvas again before coming back and lasting once more until the end of the round.
Mateus was visibly shaken entering the third when Price stepped it up again.
The Olympic gold medalist landed a flurry of powerful punches before Mateus turned her back, stuck a straight left hand and went to the floor for the third time.
Referee Steve Gray then waved off the match and Mateus’ team threw in the towel moments later when the match was stopped.
