Turkey calls for talks as conflict in Syria escalates

Turkey has called for talks between the warring parties following a successful attack by Islamic rebels in Syria.

Recent events show that the Syrian government must reach an agreement with the people and the opposition forces, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said at a press conference in Ankara with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi.

Turkey’s goal is to see Syrian refugees living in Turkey return to Syria, he said.

Mr. Fidan called for the revival of the so-called Astana talks involving Russia, Iran and Turkey.

Moscow and Tehran back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the war, while Ankara backs the Syrian National Army (SNA), a rebel coalition that includes several groups that have launched an offensive against the Kurdish YPG militia in northern Syria.
