Top Dem Jim Clyburn Exposed to be Behind Biden’s Hunter Pardon

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced Friday that the top Democrat played a key role behind the scenes in urging President Joe Biden to pardon his son Hunter.

In his first press conference since the pardon, Jean-Pierre pulled back the curtain on how the decision was made, explaining that Biden “struggled” with it before the bombshell announcement dropped last Sunday.

“It was not easy for him to choose,” said Jean-Pierre.

When pressed on the issue that Mr. Biden once said that he would not forgive his son, Jean-Pierre said that Rep. Jim Clyburn, one of Biden’s allies in Congress, had criticized the president’s thinking.

Clyburn has always been a close friend of Biden.

Clyburn admitted on CNN earlier this week that he “urged” Biden to pardon Hunter when the two spoke two weeks ago, but said the president “has not been silent.”

In emphasizing Clyburn’s work, Jean-Pierre seemed to acknowledge Clyburn’s cachet, with life breathed entering Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign with praise—helped Biden secure a first-round victory in South Carolina.

“That was the conversation that the Congressman himself had with the president two weeks ago,” said Jean-Pierre. “They said that the president did not keep quiet when he encouraged the president to do this. And this week, [Biden] he thought about it, weighed it. It was not an easy decision to make.”

As reporters continued to discuss the pardon, Jean-Pierre repeatedly returned to the conversation between Clyburn and Biden.

Jean-Pierre confirmed Clyburn's comments about his efforts to urge Biden to be pardoned.

Clyburn said on CNN that he recommended Biden because he felt the legal system was treating Hunter Biden unfairly.

“If Hunter had gone the way everyone else did, I wouldn’t have felt this way,” Clyburn said. “But if you are sued because you did not fill out a form to take a gun that you have never used — it is taken and thrown away — then you will be judged as a crime. That, to me, is a problem. “

Hunter Biden was awaiting trial on two separate charges — one for filling out a form to buy a gun and the other for tax evasion.

Biden has said in the past, as his son’s cases work through the legal system, that he would not pardon him, even if he were convicted. However, the president reversed course, making the same point as Clyburn – that Hunter was politically motivated.

“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s affairs can come to any other conclusion than that Hunter was singled out only because my son – and that’s wrong,” Biden said in a statement about the pardon.

He added, “In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me — and there’s no reason to believe it’s going to stop here.” That’s enough.”
