Earlier this week, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the New York Rangers are ready to shake up their roster due to their ongoing struggles.
Friedman specifically mentioned defenseman Jacob Trouba as one of the Rangers’ available players.
Trouba should attract interest as he is a right back who plays a tough game and kills penalties. However, his $8 million cap until next season and the 15-man no-trade list create some obstacles.
But let’s discuss the three teams that could get him.
Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings were heavily linked to Trouba this past offseason, making them a clear team to watch in the lottery. They had a rough start to the season, as evidenced by their 10-11-2 record. They’ve also only won four of their last ten games, so GM Steve Yzerman could try hard soon.
There is no doubt that the Red Wings could use a defenseman like Trouba right now. The Rochester, Michigan native will give them an upgrade for their second pairing and would immediately become a significant part of their penalty kill if acquired.
If Trouba is more open to a move to the Red Wings this season, they could be an ideal landing spot for the veteran.
Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabers were rumored to be interested in Trouba last season, so they could be another club to watch. Like the Red Wings, the Sabers are another Atlantic Division club that could use a four right-shot defenseman. They also have plenty of cap space to work with, so Troub’s salary wouldn’t be an issue.
The Sabers are currently 11-10-2 and are one of several Eastern Conference teams in contention for a playoff spot. Therefore, they could benefit from adding an experienced defender like Trouba to their group as they look to take the next step.
Chicago Blackhawks
If he is willing to trade him there, the Chicago Blackhawks could be an interesting landing spot for Trouba.
The Blackhawks are an exciting team on the rise, with Connor Bedard as the superstar youngster they are building around. With this, it wouldn’t be too surprising if the Blackhawks looked to add a proven leader like Trouba to mentor their young players and help develop their culture.
Trouba would also bolster the Blackhawks’ blueline and could be a perfect fit on their second pairing. Additionally, he would make the rebuilding Blackhawks a tougher team to go up against due to his hard-nosed style of play.
