The Detroit Lions have a seemingly endless amount of trick plays to choose from.
Earlier this season, they had a hook and ladder match with Penei Sewell, their fantastic 335-pound left tackle. Sewell is a crazy athlete. He also has a career-high 9-yard catch that came on third-and-seven to seal a win over the Minnesota Vikings.
But letting Sewell pass the ball? The lions are just having fun with everyone now.
That certainly seemed to be the plan. Sewell flipped into reverse and it sure looked like it was going to go downhill. Nothing opened up downfield, so he had to eat it for a 1-yard loss, officially deciding the sack for the Bears. Chicago defensive lineman Austin Booker and linebacker Jack Sanborn probably didn’t plan on each getting a half-sack on the Pro Bowl line Thursday.
The best thing about the game is that it lost yardage, but then the Lions home crowd went wild. They love this Lions team, they love Sewell, and they clearly enjoy offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s mischievous sense of humor when it comes to making crazy trick plays.
Sewell failed to pass, so we didn’t see what kind of arm he had. Once he gets to know the Lions, he gets another chance.
