Steph, Draymond excited about Warriors trade for ‘competitor’ Schröder appeared originally on NBC Sports Bay Area
SAN FRANCISCO — It’s clear that the newest addition to the Warriors, Dennis Schröder, is excited to be teammates with future Hall of Famers Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
But Schröder’s joy pales in comparison to the excitement Curry and Green felt.
“He’s a real competitor,” Curry said of Schröder after the Warriors’ 143-133 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. “He can create, score, run the attack, the whole lineup. I’m excited to see him get involved. A guy I can play with in the backfield can handle a lot of the ball handler responsibility when I’m off the field. He gives us another guy who can attack the defense and on the other hand loves to compete.
“He also stumbles defensively. So it should be trouble-free for him. We’ll see how it looks.”
Curry has first-hand experience against Schröder, as the two guards faced each other 17 times, according to Statmuse.com. Both are listed as guards, but “combo guard” is a more accurate description for them. Anyone can play on or off the ball.
Green loves what he’s seen from Schröder, who entered the NBA in 2013 — a year before Draymond — as a first-round pick (17th overall) of the Atlanta Hawks.
“I love the demeanor he carries himself with,” Green said. “It is worn as it should be in every room, always. I respect such people. I look forward to being teammates, to getting to know him better. But I know who it is and what it is, and that’s important.’
At 180 pounds, Schröder (pronounced SHROO-dah) fills the role previously held by De’Anthony Melton, who was signed in July and became the starter before the Nov. 12 season ended when he suffered a partial tear. left ACL that required surgery.
Schröder is expected to join Curry in Golden State’s backcourt.
Curry and Green were also particularly pleased with the urgency with which Golden State’s front office explored the move. General manager Mike Dunleavy and his lieutenants went to Schröder last week and finalized the deal on Sunday as soon as NBA rules allow.
“It definitely gives us a sense of what the front office is feeling and thinking,” Green said. “Mike has been great since he stepped into this role. To have the sense of urgency to make this deal like this (snap fingers) just continues to show why he is who he is, why he took this role and why he will continue to be great in this league as a general manager. .”
Both Green and Curry were consulted before the trade, which sent Melton and two-way guard Reece Beekman to the Nets along with three future second-round picks. The Warriors also received a second-round pick from Brooklyn.
“With Bob [former GM Myers] and with Mike, it’s always a conversation if there’s something real or anything that’s worth a serious conversation to get me involved at that point,” Curry said. “I don’t want to be distracted by what-ifs and all that type of stuff.” It happened pretty quickly. We’re excited about the opportunity to play a guy we’ve played against for a long time.”
