A South Carolina woman accused of planting alcohol in a newlywed couple’s golf cart, killing the bride and seriously injuring the groom on their wedding day was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison.
A judge handed down the sentence in a Charleston court after Jamie Komoroski, 27, pleaded guilty to all charges related to the April 28, 2023 crash, which killed Samantha Miller, 34, and left Aric Hutchinson with brain damage and hours of broken bones. after they got married.
Komoroski was charged with reckless homicide and three counts of felony DUI.
District Court Judge Dedra L. Jefferson sentenced Komoroski to 25 years for DUI causing death. He was sentenced to 10 and 15 years for his other crimes but will serve the same term.
“He’s not going to wake up in 10, 25 years,” Samantha Miller’s mother, Lisa Miller, told the court after Komoroski pleaded guilty, according to NBC affiliate WCBD of Charleston. “This is a lifetime.”
Komoroski apologized for what he called his “recklessness” and said he was “hopelessly” addicted to alcohol at the time of the crash.
“I take full responsibility for my actions,” he said at one point, looking at the victims’ relatives and loved ones. “I hope one day you will forgive me. I know forgiveness must be earned.”
The newlyweds and the couple were driving a golf cart to a Folly Beach rental home after their wedding when Komoroski, driving 65 mph, crashed into the back of a minivan around 10 p.m.
Everyone in the golf cart, which was traveling 25 mph, was ejected, according to WCBD.
Miller died of blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.
