SANTA CLARA – The opening portion of Wednesday’s practice did not bring any encouraging signs for 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

Brandon Allen, Joshua Dobbs and practice squad quarterback Tanner Mordecai took turns throwing during the 49ers’ preseason practices, while Purdy was mainly limited to a pair of handoffs.

Purdy suffered a right shoulder injury in the 49ers’ Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks and doesn’t appear to have improved much after the team sat out the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Purdy threw a bit on Monday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. However, it does not seem that his physical condition allows him to start throwing.

Allen, who took first-team reps earlier in practice, will start Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills if Purdy is unable to play, Shanahan said this week.

Allen started and played every snap in the 49ers’ 38-10 loss to the Packers. He completed 17 of 29 passes for 199 yards and one touchdown with one interception.

Purdy took a back seat Wednesday as the 49ers quarterbacks went through some footwork drills with short passes. He threw one short throw before the quarterbacks worked on some passing drills.

Purdy underwent an MRI last Monday, which revealed no structural damage, Shanahan said. He underwent another MRI later in the week after his shoulder failed to improve.

“We always get more than one, when you get one and it seems fine, then you have some pain later in the week,” Shanahan said. “Then take another one to make sure you didn’t miss anything. And so he did it after Thursday’s training.

The 49ers will have practices on Thursday and Friday before flying to Buffalo. The 49ers cut Purdy last week before going to Green Bay.
