Oklahoma was penalized twice for its fans invading the field at the end of its 24-3 victory over Alabama on Saturday.
The Sooners were fined $100,000, as is customary, the first time the school’s fans entered the field after a big win. However, the fine was doubled with an additional $100,000 fine because the game was delayed by an untimely thunderstorm. Oklahoma fans flooded the court with 28 seconds left.
Oklahoma fans stormed the field despite the Sooners needing one more play to end the game. The field had to be cleared of fans before Oklahoma could officially punt for a three-TD victory and start celebrating for good.
The Oklahoma field storm came just hours after Arizona State fans stormed the field early at the end of the Sun Devils’ win over BYU. The game appeared to be over after a questionable time management call by Arizona State to end it, but a replay, as fans surrounded officials on the field, determined there was one second left before Sam Leavitt’s pass landed in the stands.
That gave BYU a Hail Mary attempt to win the game, but Jake Retzlaff’s pass to Chase Roberts fell short of the end zone.
Oklahoma wasn’t the only SEC school fined on Sunday. Auburn was fined $100,000 for assault on the field after the Tigers’ 43-41 four-overtime victory over Texas A&M. The win was just Auburn’s second of the SEC season and kept the team’s hopes alive. The Tigers need to beat Alabama in Week 14 to finish 6-6 and make a bowl game.
The SEC’s field fines process mandates that fines be paid to losing teams. So Alabama gets $200,000 from Oklahoma, while the Aggies get Auburn’s fine.
