Mets top prospect Luisangel Acuña he was red hot at the plate during the Venezuelan Winter League.
The speedy outfielder helped the Cardenales de Lara secure their doubleheader Friday as he reached base four times, stole three bases, drove in three runs and scored three runs of his own.
Acuña is now hitting .388 with two doubles, one triple, one home run, nine RBIs, nine stolen bases and an impressive .996 OPS through his first 17 Winter League games.
He has spent most of his time in the field at shortstop, making only one appearance in the field thus far.
The youngster had some ups and downs in the minors, but performed admirably when called upon to make his anticipated big league debut in place of the injured. Francisco Lindor down the section.
Acuña showed off his strong defense and game-changing speed while hitting an impressive .308 with a triple, two doubles, three home runs and a .966 OPS in 14 games.
While he certainly made a positive impression, it remains to be seen what type of role he will play this season in a crowded Mets outfield with even more young talent in the outfield.
“Any time you can make an impact at the major league level, it’s a good thing.” David Stearns he said in GM meetings. “Obviously he performed at a very important time of the season for us. We also understand that it’s been a couple of weeks and I think we’ve got a lot of performance history from all of these guys to fall back on.”
