Lynch reveals 49ers QB plan if Purdy can’t go against Packers

Lynch reveals 49ers QB plan if Purdy can’t go vs. Packers, originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

If Brock Purdy doesn’t start against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the 49ers have a backup plan in place for a key NFC game at Lambeau Field.

General manager John Lynch detailed the plan on his weekly “Murph & Markus” appearance on KNBR Friday.

“Brandon Allen and Josh Dobbs would be ready, but Brandon would get the first snaps.

Purdy has been a limited participant in practice this week as he continues to deal with a shoulder injury suffered during San Francisco’s last-second loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

“It was sometime during the Seattle game, I’m not sure Brock knows [when he injured it]”During the match he kind of struggled through it, but I think he was so focused on winning that match.” We had a plan to try to quiet it down. Wednesday [he] he didn’t do any throwing. He started throwing Thursday and then went in and did some rehab as planned.

“We’ll see where he is today, hopefully he’ll make progress and we can try to do that this weekend, but we’ll see.”

Lynch also revealed that Purdy had an MRI on his shoulder, but did not release any other details.

The starting quarterback for the upcoming game usually speaks to reporters on Thursday before the game, but since the 49ers don’t yet know who that will be, after a better evaluation after Friday’s practice, the quarterback who takes the stage on Friday is expected to be the starter.

“From this point of view, we have a good feeling [after the MRI]but you have to be able to go out there and operate,” Lynch said. Brock will show up here today and we’ll see how far he can go in terms of practice and make some decisions accordingly.”

Purdy started all 10 games for the 49ers this season. He is completing 66 percent of his pass attempts for 2,613 yards with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also ran the ball 51 times for 267 yards with a team-leading four touchdowns on the ground. He rushed for 144 yards on 39 attempts in 16 games last season.

Allen, 32, has only nine starts in his NFL career. His last start came in the final week of the 2021 season when he completed 15 of 29 passes for 136 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions for the Cincinnati Bengals in a 21-16 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Allen beat out Joshua Dobbs as the backup to open the regular season.
