The NHL on Monday fined Edmonton Oilers’ Jeff Skinner $2,000 for embellishment.
The automatic fine comes after the left winger received his second citation for embellishment this season. He previously received a warning for embellishment after an Oct. 22 game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
The NHL’s hockey operations department monitors all games, recording fines for embellishment and undeclared flags on the ice that it deems worthy of a penalty.
In this case, the department flagged a no-call from the Oilers’ Nov. 23 game against the New York Rangers.
Skinner had the puck in his hands along the goalposts when he was defended from behind by Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller. Miller reaches out with his stick to try to dislodge the puck and it appears to get stuck between Skinner’s shoulder and body. Skinner then fell to the ice while sending a backhand pass to the center of the ice. The pass was intercepted by Rangers defender Adam Fox. When Skinner returned to the bench, he looked at the referee.
Rule 64 of the NHL rules states that any player who brazenly dunks, embellishes a fall or reaction, or fakes an injury receives a minor penalty.
Players and teams who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties receive more serious fines on a graduated scale. And when the players of any club collect a total of four fines for beautifying or diving, the NHL starts fining the coach as well.
