Georgia Southern’s dwell eagle mascot, Freedom, has handed away after 20 years as the college’s beloved mascot, the college introduced Saturday.
“It’s with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved dwell bald eagle mascot, Freedom,” the college mentioned on social media. “For greater than 20 years, Freedom has served as an emblem of satisfaction for Georgia Southern, uniting Eagle Nation.”
Freedom grew to become Southern’s mascot in 2004 after a rescue effort after being knocked out of a nest in Maitland, Florida. An injured beak prevented his launch again into the wild.

“He was acquired with the permission of the US Fish and Wildlife Service,” the college mentioned. “Since then, Freedom has awed, impressed and helped educate generations concerning the significance of wildlife, endangered species and conservation.
“Thanks for uplifting us, Freedom. Soar past.”
Georgia Southern soccer coach Clay Helton had a heartfelt publish Saturday on X, previously Twitter, saying he was heartbroken for Wildlife Middle government director, Steven Hein, who cared for Freedom.
“Heartbroken for Steve Hein and all of Eagle Nation. Freedom represented every little thing that’s nice about Georgia Southern,” Helton mentioned. “Seeing him fly underneath blue skies at Paulson will ceaselessly be etched in my reminiscence. Thanks Freedom for being part of our household.”
