Former Blackhawks Prospect Acquired by Oilers on Waivers

Alex Regula, a prospect who was in the Chicago Blackhawks organization two seasons ago, was cleared by the Boston Bruins and picked up by the Edmonton Oilers.

Chicago traded Regulo to the Bruins as part of a deal to acquire Taylor Hall in the 2023 offseason. The Bruins re-signed Regulo last offseason to a one-year, $775,000 contract (league minimum).

He got injured before the start of the season and was on injured reserve all season. When he recovered, he was placed on waivers for the second straight season. The Bruins also cut him from the roster in 2023 in training camp.

Regula played all 22 games of his NHL career in Chicago and didn’t play a single one last season for Boston. He spent the entire 2023/24 season playing in the AHL, where the defenseman scored four goals and collected 26 points in 55 games. In the 2022-23 season, he produced five goals and 21 points in 51 games for the Rockford IceHogs.

The former Blackhawks prospect has one career goal that came in the 2021-22 season. Regula’s time in Chicago is clearly coming to an end as there simply wasn’t room for him to grow in the organization. The Blackhawks probably have the best and/or most young guard/defensive prospects in the league right now.

Regula is not a bad defenseman and could prove some people wrong at the NHL level. There is some ascension that has been achieved in Junior. He’s a solid depth piece with at least some NHL experience, and that’s what the Oilers seem to be hoping for with his pickup. He could very well end up back in Boston soon, but he won’t be returning to the Blackhawks.
