Erie gym closes in fear of the sky falling. How to know if yours can

Erie’s post-Thanksgiving winter storm was so bad it’s causing indoor tennis and pickleball games to be canceled.

Westwood Racquet Club, 2660 Zuck Road, announced to members Tuesday afternoon that the facility is temporarily closed due to heavy snow and ice on its roof and exterior walls.

Accumulations of snow and ice caused part of the area’s canals to fall over the main gate.

“We are planning to remove snow and ice from these areas and will let everyone know when it is safe to return,” Westwood officials said in an email. “We want to make sure there are no structural issues before we open.”

Last week’s storm dumped more than three feet of snow in much of northern Erie County, causing structural issues at some properties.

Warning signs of pressure, snowy skies

Erie County Government officials have posted a list of warning signs on its Facebook page that your roof may collapse due to snow and ice. It includes:

  • Loose ceiling tiles or boards, ceiling boards that fall from the ceiling gutter, and/or sprinkler lines that fall from the water heads.

  • Explosions, explosions, and noises

  • Roof members are sunk, including decorative metal or plywood sheathing

  • Bowing truss bottom chords or web members

  • Doors and/or windows that cannot be opened or closed

  • The wood parts are cracked or split

  • Cracks in walls or masonry

  • A lot of water accumulation in the areas that do not collect water on the roofs

Tips for removing snow from the roof

Only qualified personnel should climb onto roofs to remove snow, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

If you use the roof from the ground, stay several feet from the eave to prevent falling snow and ice.

No date has been set for Westwood to reopen. Prepaid classes will be created or credited to members’ accounts, Westwood officials said in an email.
