ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (WGN-TV) — Residents of Arlington Heights, Illinois, are picking up the pieces Friday night after a garbage truck exploded and caught fire, damaging several homes.
According to Arlington Heights police, around 4 p.m., police and firefighters responded to reports that a garbage truck, operated by Groot Waste Management, caught fire near the intersection of North Dryden Avenue and Euclid Avenue in Arlington Heights.

Crews arrived and began investigating the incident, but police said that’s when part of the truck exploded.
Police said the car was running on natural gas (CNG), and officials believe one of the tanks exploded during the fire.
During the explosion, two policemen and a fireman were injured by flying debris and after the explosion.
Officials described the explosion as “significant” and said parts of the truck were thrown into the air, landing several bricks.
The shock is said to have also caused damage to property in the surrounding area. Windows of nearby houses were smashed and parts of the roof and sides were blown off.
The explosion also destroyed the windshield of the fire engine that was on the scene and the airbags of the squad car that was parked near the used engine.

SkyCam 9 was on the scene at 5 pm when two ladder trucks were seen spraying water on the heavily damaged truck.
According to authorities, law enforcement experts documented the incident using digital and drone photos.

Crews from Groot Waste Management also responded to the scene and cleaned up any debris left behind.
The badly damaged garbage truck was towed from the scene by the wreckage around 7:15 pm.
It is currently unknown what caused the first fire.
