Cybertruck culture has fallen and is still falling

When the Tesla Cybertruck debuted, its first Foundation Series models cost $120,000. That hasn’t stopped Tesla loyalists from spending nearly twice as much to get their hands on one, and sales trends have shown the folly of that approach: Cybertruck sales are falling and falling fast.

Cars And Bids has received 24 Cybertrucks since the model’s launch, and the first few auctions drew big numbers: 158,000 bids that didn’t meet reserve, one at $145,000, the first truck to sell at $145,000. Subsequent auctions, though, have fallen from their highs. Auctions ending in six digits seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

Come with a trailer that caught a few Cybertrucks, but the site’s results graph is confusing. It shows a deep line of truck prices – a line so neat, in fact, that you can draw it next to the Cars And Bids value:

The trendline is not perfect, with an R-squared of only 0.608, but there is a clear downward trend – and an upward one at that. Separating the sale from the top beds that did not meet the reserve shows us another information: Despite the reduced prices at the auctions, many of these auctions are selling. When setting maintenance costs, Cybertruck owners are expecting less and less value for their vehicles.

Interestingly, some of Tesla’s trends can be seen on this graph. Sales slowed as August rolled around, then stopped completely for nearly a month — just like quietly killing Tesla off the theoretical base-model truck. When the sales started again, they started to be lifted slightly from the original trendline. Without another base model to compete with, the trucks that were sold seemed to hold their value better.

Cybertruck owners, for their part, are very concerned about downtime. Forums are speculating that these trucks may be priced lower than their original MSRP, which might make one wonder if they’ve ever bought a new car. If one is used. Or get caught up in money at all. If you’re thinking about Cybertruck as an investment, maybe stick to playing stocks.
