Columbus police say a man electrocuted on a power line may be trying to steal copper

Columbus police are investigating after the body of a man was found hanging from an AEP power line Monday afternoon on the city’s Southeast Side.

Sgt. Joe Albert said police received a call at 2:43 pm on a report of a body hanging from a power line in the 800 block of Stambaugh Avenue. The victim, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Albert said the Homicide Unit is not investigating because police believe there was no foul play involved in the man’s death. Police believe he may have been trying to steal copper wires when he was electrocuted, he said.

An AEP spokesperson confirmed that they dispatched crews to the scene early Monday afternoon and are working with Columbus police.
