Black bear populations are growing in New Mexico

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish says the black bear population continues to grow due to improved conservation efforts. Game and Fish said that every year, a team of wildlife scientists and veterinarians survey northern New Mexico to determine how many black bears are in the state, how strong the population is, and how well they are adapting to the ever-changing climate.

“So this activity of taking collars is giving us information about how these bears are doing in the current situation. What is happening to them as the climate is changing. It is happening to them as the civilizations are growing and they really understand how they are making adjustments and changing the way they use resources and that we still have strong people who are continuing to grow and continue despite the changes that are happening,” he said. Game and Fish said a study conducted by New Mexico State University found the highest density of black bears in northern New Mexico with 28 bears per 100 square kilometers.
