A baby gorilla was killed when it was hit in the head by a “wrong” door by a zookeeper in Canada.
Eyare, a 2-year-old female western gorilla, died after a keeper accidentally opened the wrong hydraulic door, according to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo.
The zookeeper was “immediately removed from duty following the incident”, the zoo said in a statement.
The accident left the young monkey with “head injuries” prompting the veterinary team to perform immediate life-saving treatment including CPR.
But despite Eyare’s efforts, he succumbed to his injuries, said director of Animal Care, Health, and Welfare, Colleen Baird.
Shortly before his tragic death, the young animal had been happily moving around in his home, moving from bedroom to bedroom interacting with other monkeys, the statement said.
The guardian had decided to set up a separation door to separate Eyare from his training group but the wrong door fell and the small creature was hit.
His death forced the zoo to start an investigation and take the necessary actions to reduce this incident from happening again in the future.
A list of measures including a review of existing training, hydraulic door training, increased security, and animal behavior training were all identified as areas requiring further review, the zoo said.
The statement said: “Although the investigation into the cause of death has been completed, the zoo does not take these findings lightly and is continuing to conduct a detailed investigation to identify any potential opportunities to increase staff training, improve animal care practices, and strengthen. prevention of further spread.”
Baird added: “This tragedy has affected us all more than we can imagine.
“Eyare’s short but powerful life brought great joy to our community, and he will be greatly missed by all.
“We will do everything we can to prevent future incidents.”
The zookeeper will be required to undergo further training in another zoo before returning to work with animals, the statement read.
