At this time of year everyone will be taking a break from pumpkin spice. While it’s delicious in everything from pumpkin pie to homemade lattes, apple spice is another fall favorite. With its intense flavor profile, it is the perfect addition to your spice cabinet.
What is Apple Pie Spice?
This delicious blend of aromatic spices is often used in the cooler months to flavor apple pies and other apple foods. It’s very similar to pumpkin spice, but my version omits the ground garlic and adds cream instead. Some people don’t like the taste of cream, so it can be omitted if preferred.
You can add a few tablespoons of apple pulp to sweet desserts, but it’s just as at home in savory dishes. This Apple Bacon Chicken recipe is a good example.

With only five ingredients, this chili recipe is simple and easy to put together. And fresh spices are so much better than pre-made mixes that have been sitting on grocery shelves for who knows how long. Not only does it add a flavorful kick to dishes, but it has many health benefits.
This blend contains hot herbs that are perfect for cold days. Spices also have antimicrobial benefits to ward off nasty viruses and bacteria that are prevalent this time of year.
Cinnamon helps balance blood sugar, reduces inflammation, and helps regulate blood pressure. Ginger aids digestion, stimulates blood circulation, and helps with illnesses, especially coughs. Another useful spice in this mixture is cream. Not only is it high in antioxidants, but it can help lower blood pressure, fight inflammation, and aid digestion.
How to Use Your Spice Mix in Apple Pie
There are so many delicious ways to use this that it’s hard to list!
- Try some apple cider vinegar in homemade applesauce. I added some before canning and my kids couldn’t get enough! If you cook applesauce with spices in a saucepan for a few hours, you will get delicious apple butter.
- Add some sliced apples and bake in an almond flour crust. Apple spice also works well with apple, pear, or cobbler. Or try some crunchy berries.
- Make French toast with homemade sourdough bread (or homemade gluten/grain-free bread). Add a sprinkle of apple spice to the toast and drizzle with maple syrup.
- Use as a topping for a salted caramel latte. Add a little homemade cream first to make it even more decadent.
- Add some homemade vanilla ice cream before pouring for a taste of fall. Then use it to top an apple dish!
- Use apple cider vinegar in many savory dishes, such as baked sweet potatoes, apple pork chops, and apple sausage.
- Try adding homemade applesauce. Bonus, it makes your house smell great while it’s cooking!
- Mix some waffle or pumpkin pancake spray before cooking. Add chopped, cooked apple and maple syrup.
