Adames reacts hilariously to Buster’s Giants record breaking contract appeared originally on NBC Sports Bay Area
Willy Adames had no idea at first that the Giants contract he signed was a record.
In short, they asked if he knew his new contract broke the San Francisco franchise record for the richest contract, previously held by Buster Posey.
“I didn’t know until it was done [laughs]Adames said during his introductory news conference Thursday at Oracle Park in San Francisco. “It was kind of crazy to me because Buster is obviously a Hall of Famer. I don’t even know what you’re talking about, man. I don’t want to say wrong words here and get fired the next day, I just signed a contract [laughs].”
The contract — seven years, $182 million — gives the Giants serious strength in the lineup. Adames hit 32 home runs last season, third most among all MLB shortstops.
The signing exemplifies Posey’s new approach to team building by bringing in superstar free agents. For San Francisco to remain competitive in the deep (and expensive) NL West, relying on developing homegrown talent won’t be enough.
And it appears the Giants aren’t done aggressively pursuing talent on the free agent market, as the organization is reportedly battling to sign pitcher Corbin Burnes.
Since winning the 2014 World Series, San Francisco has struggled to make the playoffs as the Los Angeles Dodgers have dominated the division. With Los Angeles opening the checkbook at will to sign Blake Snell and Michael Conforto this offseason, getting another strong bat was important.
While Adames has the richest contract right now, don’t be surprised if the Giants surpass that dollar amount in the future.
