A Memphis woman pleads for help as cars fly into her home

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Memphis woman says she is scared every day, afraid that a car will come into her home near Interstate 240.

She has had many phone calls, and is pleading for something to be done before her worst fears come true.

Video shows a pickup truck plowing into a backyard in South Memphis, just off I-240 Monday morning.

The truck landed in Robbie Woods’ yard.

“He was right there on my tracks. The car was there, I went around to the other side to help him out, and took him to the steps. He was not in good shape,” said Woods.

Woods only lived in his house for three and a half years.

“During that time, there have been about 15 accidents,” he said.

But he is not walking. “I’m 65 years old. I can’t walk anymore, that’s all.”

He says he needs help. His house is off Cummings Street and backs onto I-240. While the chain link fence that separates his yard from the center has been torn down, Woods says that when it was up, it did little to protect against flying cars.

He showed us some wrecks, like when Honda hit his house.

And there were other issues, some involving death.

“He was a man and a woman, a woman, dead,” Woods said. “Then I had a teenager, his car, melted, gray, a small sports car, crashed and ended up in the back of my house. … We had a dead boy who hit this corner, he died.”

Tragedy and close calls leaving him now living in fear.

“My grandchildren can’t even come back here to play,” he said.

He is calling on the city and government officials for help, to build some kind of strong barrier between his house and the center before something happens.

“Give us protection here so that we can save our homes,” he pleaded.

We reached out to the Tennessee Department of Transportation about the issue and possible remedies for Woods. We are waiting to hear back.
