BELIEVABLE STORIES:
The suspect, a 16-year-old boy, is accused of shooting and killing 39-year-old Alejandro Lopez-Lechuga outside a home on Jester Lane on the morning of Wednesday, November 20.
Witnesses told police that the teenager was trying to break into a car outside the Jester Lane residence when Lopez-Lechuga intervened.
Homicide detectives obtained video evidence that led them to identify a 16-year-old boy as a suspect in the fatal shooting, as well as a suspect vehicle that left the scene, according to Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Joe Albert.
Police and SWAT officers set up a search of the suspect’s address. The boy left the home in a car believed to be the one seen in the shooting on Jester Lane.
Police followed the vehicle to the 6000 block of Cooper Colony Drive on Wednesday afternoon.
Albert said that a policeman tried to stop the car when the person allegedly got out of the side of the car with a gun in his hand and started running in front of the house.
The Columbus Division of Police released surveillance video from three different officers at the scene.
One of the videos shows the officer getting out of his car and several officers could be heard telling the suspect to put his hands up.
The video then shows the suspect running in front of the officer with a gun in his hand. The policeman fires two shots and the gun goes off.
There are four more shots heard as the prisoner continues to run. The police then chase the suspect and tell him to drop down.
The suspect goes down. He was shot once, according to police.
Bodycam footage from one officer shows him handcuffing the suspect.
As the police called a doctor, they found that the suspect had been shot in his chest and hip.
Tactical medics arrived a short time later, and the suspect was transported to an ambulance.
He was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital where his condition was listed as stable as of Friday, November 22.
The suspect is charged with murder and two counts of assault in the Jester Lane shooting. He previously faced charges including sexual battery and theft, WBNS-10 TV reported.
It is possible that he will also face charges for Wednesday night’s incident, according to police.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
