From training camp until now, the Detroit Red Wings have had quite a whirlwind in their net. Cam Talbot, Ville Husso, Jack Campbell, Alex Lyon and Sebastian Cossa all had to play one big game in goaltending musical chairs.
However, injuries rear their ugly head and (unfortunately) make some decisions easier.
Late last night, the Red Wings recalled Campbell under emergency conditions.
Campbell joined the NHLPA Player Assistance Program in early October and returned to the team on November 17. He was placed on waivers at the time and subsequently reported to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Having not played this year, it took several weeks of practice to acclimate before playing the game. Campbell made his season debut with the Griffins last weekend.
The Griffins lost both games Campbell started before this emergency recall. But he put up solid numbers, including a 2.55 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.
It was revealed yesterday that Husso will start today’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Talbot and Lyon are injured, but the duo should be back to full health within the next week.
Depending on how things go with Huss in net tonight, it’s possible Campbell doesn’t play a game before he has to be sent down. Or he could get an opportunity to face one of his old teams.
Either way, the Red Wings’ netminder situation is something to watch closely as the season winds down.
