A La Quinta Middle School student reportedly dies following an emergency

A student was pronounced dead Monday after experiencing a medical emergency at La Quinta Middle School, KESQ first reported.

Cal Fire responded to a report of a medical emergency involving a toddler at 10:11 a.m. in the 78-000 block of Avenue 50 in La Quinta.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputies were dispatched to assist Riverside County Fire at 10:23 am, but the student had already been transported by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital before they arrived.

Details of the student’s identity or cause of death have not been released. Desert Sands Unified School District has not yet confirmed the death, but sent the following statement through a spokesperson:

“We care deeply about our students and their families and are committed to respecting families’ privacy during this very difficult time,” the statement read. “Once more information is released and with the family’s consent, we will share any information they wish to share.”

Counseling and emotional support was provided on Monday to help students and staff cope and will continue to be available in the coming days.

Monday was the first day back to school after the Thanksgiving break.
