Former congressman Matt Gaetz remains a Trump supporter, even after the Florida Republican saw his bid to become attorney general in the upcoming administration heat up.
“I will never want another president again,” Gaetz, who resigned last week under a year of impeachment, wrote on X on Thursday.
The praise event was in response to Trump’s thank you message, in which the president-elect slammed “Radical Left Lunatics.”
“Happy Thanksgiving to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who worked hard to destroy our Country, but failed miserably, and will continue to fail, because their ideas and plans are so hopelessly evil that the adults of our Country have given a great victory to those who want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! Mr. Trump they wrote on social media earlier in the day. “Don’t worry, our Country will soon be respectable, creative, fair, and strong, and you’ll be more proud to be an American than ever!”
Earlier in the week, Biden marked the holiday by holding his last turkey pardon on the South Lawn, giving the holiday to two turkeys named Peach and Blossom.
Gaetz announced last week that he would not seek the attorney general nomination, even though he resigned from Congress after the Trump administration tapped him for the position. The nomination proved controversial, as a House committee questioned Gaetz on charges of paying for sex and having sex with a minor, which he strongly denied.
“I had good meetings with the senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful response – and the wonderful support of so many. “While the momentum is strong, it is clear that my confirmation was detrimental to the important work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” Gaetz wrote on social media about his decision. “There is no time to waste on the long-term Washington debate, so I will withdraw my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.”
The former congressman added that he will not return to the House, but will continue to support the Trump administration.
In Gaetz’s place, Mr. Trump chose another loyalist as a candidate, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Bondi is an experienced prosecutor and longtime Trump aide who has supported the president-elect through presidential campaigns and impeachment hearings. He also controversially left Trump University, shortly after the Trump foundation gave him a gift.
