NEWS: US authorities have charged Indian billionaire Gautam Adani with a multi-billion dollar bribery and fraud scheme.
The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in New York.
It accuses Adani and his nephew Sagar of paying $265 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar power contracts.
Prosecutors also allege Adanis and another executive at Adani Green Energy, former CEO Vneet Jaain, hid bribes from lenders and investors to obtain $3 billion in loans and bonds.
Five other people were hit with related charges.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Gautam and Sagar Adani.
There was no comment from the Adani Group or the Indian embassy in Washington.
According to Forbes magazine, Adani is worth 68 billion dollars.
This makes him the 22nd richest person in the world, and the second-richest Indian.
Last week, Adani said in a social media post that he planned to invest $10,000 in US energy conservation and infrastructure projects, and create 15,000 jobs.
