NEWS: Huawei unveiled the Mate 70 smartphone series on Tuesday (November 26).
The Chinese tech giant also revealed its own operating system.
That’s a big step because as the firm looks to break clean from US technology.
The Mate 70 is the successor to the 60 that was released in August last year.
It was widely seen as marking Huawei’s return to high-end phones in competition with Apple.
Its business has been hit hard by US export curbs in the past.
The opening comes as the US is expected to announce new export deals.
Washington could add up to 200 Chinese chip companies to black market suppliers this week, which would prevent them from gaining access to US suppliers.
Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu, described the device as ‘the most powerful Mate mobile phone’.
He said prices will start at $758 — cheaper than Apple’s base iPhone 16 model.
Yu also said that the Mate 70 is the first mainstream smartphone to include a satellite paging system.
It also has an improved processor, and runs on Huawei’s own HarmonyOS NEXT operating system.
The Mate 70 series is the first major commercial release of HarmonyOS NEXT.
It’s a big step in Huawei’s push for software freedom since US curbs halted its access to Google services five years ago.
The patriotic sentiment surrounding Huawei’s technological advancements has helped restore its market share.
It also increased competition with other players, including iPhone maker Apple.
